Inspired by: Andie Walsh from Pretty in Pink

Out of all the iconic characters that Molly Ringwald played in the 80's, Andie Walsh from Pretty in Pink is my favorite. Andie marched to a different drummer, and her style reflected that. Her wardrobe was comprised of homemade pieces and vintage items. She preferred pink, but not the garish pink that was so huge in the 80's. Instead, she liked a delicate, vintage-looking pink, and her look was soft but quirky.

Here is a look inspired by Andie, but updated for today. It costs only $99.12.

The Savvy Stylist: Light-Wash Jeans

MaryBeth just bought these adorable Citizens of Humanity light wash jeans, but she's not sure what to wear with them. I can see why - it's a different wash than we're all used to. But I think that this bohemian-looking ensemble will work very well. It costs just $91.77, not including the cost of the jeans.

5 Under $50: Fabric Totes

In my opinion, a girl can never have too many fabric totes. They're affordable, fun, handy, and good for the environment.

Here are some of my favorite fabric totes.

Kimberlee is going to a Hollywood costume party and is planning on dressing as Audrey Hepburn's character in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Holly GoLightly. She asked for some help putting together an outfit.

The Savvy Stylist: No Longer 9 to 5

Jo writes:

I had the typical 9 to 5 office job so my wardrobe is filled with mostly business attire. I no longer have the 9 to 5, because I started my own jewelry business online. And I would now like to start showing my jewelry to local boutiques. I need an appropriate outfit that's trendy and shows my artsy side, but I also want to look professional. And needless to say, I am on a budget. Please help!

Congrats on your new career! Here is a creative but polished look for $92.47.

5 Under $50: Mad for Plaid

When I was in college, plaid was huge. I love that it's been back en vogue these past few seasons, and that it can be super-casual or fairly chic.

Here are some of my favorite current plaid items.

Inspired by: Cher Horowitz from Clueless

It's true that Cher, the heroine from classic 90's film Clueless, dressed fairly over-the-top. Matchy-matchy plaids and argyle, kneesocks, feathered and furry bags, mini backpacks. But Alicia Silverstone looked adorable in all of Cher's ensembles, and there's something to be said for making an effort while getting dressed - Cher and her friends were a perfect style foil to the effortless grunge fashion that was huge at the time.

Here is a look that updates Cher's inimitable style for today. It's more relaxed, and more understated, but still captures the essence of 1990's Beverly Hills, and it costs only $93.17!

The Savvy Stylist: Movie Premiere

Becky writes:

My boyfriend shot a movie last summer, and we will be attending the premiere that will be held in October. Could you please, please help me? I can't put together an outfit to save my life and we still haven't hit the "big time" yet, so I really need you to work your fashion magic. I'm very petite (think a little under 5 feet tall) and can't do heels without hurting myself. (Sad, I know!) I was thinking about something short and sassy as opposed to long, but I'm up for anything!

A movie? How cool! I hope you like this look, which costs only $93.11.

5 Under $50: Modcloth

If you haven't discovered Modcloth yet, then I recommend that you check them out right away. They carry unique pieces that are vintage inspired, quirky and sexy.

5 Under $50: One-Piece Swimsuits

I know that many women prefer bikinis, but one piece swimsuits can be just as chic and sexy. Plus, they're perfect for a day when you're doing heavy duty swimming or diving, and they hide a bloated tummy, which is always a plus!

Here are five of my favorite one piece bathing suits. Summer's not quite over yet, so grab 'em up!

Inspired By: Nancy Botwin from Weeds

I think that Weeds' Nancy Botwin, played brilliantly by Mary-Louise Parker, isn't quite on the radar as a fashion icon, but she should be. Nancy proves to the world that a 40-something mother of two can be incredibly sexy. The best thing about Nancy's style is that she rarely seems to try too hard. And since she lives in Southern California, she always shows plenty of skin.

Here is a look inspired by Nancy Botwin, for only $99.66.

The Savvy Stylist: New Job Part II

Here is another outfit for Whitney, who is starting a new job at a resort/day spa. This outfit is only $99.00.

5 Under $50: In the Nude

Call it nude, call it blush, call it beige. Whatever you call it, this soft, romantic color is the hottest neutral right now. It goes with just everything, and it's so sexy!

Here are some of my top affordable nude items.

The Savvy Stylist: New Job, Part I

Whitney writes:

I just got a new job in the marketing department of a day spa and resort. The work attire is business/resort casual (no jeans, shorts cannot be shorter than 3 inches above the knee, no stiletto heels - as you walk across property many times throughout the day), and I need some outfit ideas to keep my wardrobe looking fresh, stylish and comfortable! Help me out if you can!

That sounds like a great job. I'll post two outfits for you - one today and one tomorrow. Today's look is only $89.77.

5 Under $50 - Two-In-One Dresses

Everywhere I go, I've been seeing dresses that look like skirts and tops. I think it's such a great idea! Here are some of my favorites.

Inspired by: Buffy Summers

Buffy Summers was, of course, the title character of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy, portrayed by the adorable Sarah Michelle Gellar, always dressed for fashion and function. Sure, she was a southern California teen and wanted to look stylish, but she also had to be prepared to kill a vampire or demon at a moment's notice. So Buffy's wardrobe usually consisted of sleek shapes and sensible shoes, but she wasn't afraid to wear a delicate fabric... or leather!

Here is an affordable outfit inspired by Buffy, for only $92.66.

The Savvy Stylist: U2 Concert

Veronica is traveling to New York to go to the U2 concert and would like some help on what to wear.

Here's a stylish and comfortable ensemble for only $89.26.

5 Under $50: Painterly Prints

Painterly, watercolor, brushtroke, artist... whatever you want to call these prints, they're everywhere and not going away anytime soon. Hipper than florals but softer than a strong graphic print, painterly prints are edgy but delicate at the same time.

Here are my top picks for affordable painterly prints.

The Savvy Stylist: Performing a Wedding Cermony

Leah writes:

My cousin is getting married in the fall. She and her fiancee are having a very unique wedding at his parents' house and they've asked me to officiate! I got ordained online and it's all good and legal. The thing is, I don't know what to wear! They told me that I could wear whatever I want, but I figured that I'd wear something a bit more somber (but not TOO conservative) for the ceremony, and then change into a party dress for the reception. I've got my reception outfit all picked out but can you help me with something to wear for when I actually perform the ceremony? I don't need a handbag, just a dress (or suit?), shoes, and jewelry.

How cool! I love the idea of a wedding reception being performed by someone who is actually close to the bride and groom. Here is a serious but not frumpy look for only $97.29

5 Under $50: Black and White Prints

The Savvy Stylist: Not-So-Surprise Party

A reader who asked to remain anonymous writes:

I'm turning 30 in September and my husband and sister are throwing me a surprise party. How do I know this, you ask? Because my ditzy sister accidentally sent an email about it to me instead of my husband! Oops! She's devastated and I promised her that I wouldn't tell my husband, and that I'd act totally surprised when I showed up. They rented out a private room in a fancy bar in the city, and since I'm going to be the center of attention, I want to look fabulous. The challenge is: I broke my ankle, and I'm going to be in a walking cast by then, so my wardrobe options are sadly limited. Any suggestions?

I think a maxi dress and flat sandals would work best - the dress will hide the cast and the sandals will be comfy. So here's a look for just $95.29.

Oh, and happy birthday!

5 Under $50: Wardrobe Basics

There are certain pieces that every woman should have in her wardrobe. They are versatile and classic. Here are my affordable picks for wardrobe basics:

1. White Button Down Shirt ($19.75) - Wear it with dress pants or a pencil skirt for work, with great jeans for a night out, or denim shorts and flat sandals while running errands.

2. Black Pumps ($39.94) - They'll never go out of style and you can wear them with everything.

3. Jeans ($44.00) - Avoid trendy cuts (high waists, skinny jeans) and stick with a classic shape and darker denim, which works equally well for day and night.

4. Little Black Dress ($38.00) - If you buy an LBD in a knit, you can dress it up with high heels or down with flat sandals or wedges. Wear it in the summer with bare shoulders or in the fall with a cardigan or jacket.

5. Brightly Colored Scarf ($7.80) - On those lazy days when you throw on a t-shirt and jeans, just wrap a scarf around your neck. It adds interest and color to your look and brightens your face.

Inspired by: Annie Hall

If you've never seen Woody Allen's 1977 film Annie Hall, I recommend that you check it out immediately. Annie, played by Diane Keaton, is remembered for her iconic wardrobe as much as for her spirit. The character essentially created androgynous menswear chic.

Here is a look, updated for our current style, that is inspired by Annie Hall. This costs just $97.12.

The Savvy Stylist: Marilyn Manson Concert

Amanda is going to a Marilyn Manson concert soon and isn't sure what to wear. She made it clear that she's not goth, but wants to fit in with the other concertgoers.

Amanda, here's a dark but not too gothic look for only $99.58.

5 Under $50: Zippers

Zippers used to be purely functional, but I love that they're now being used as a fashion statement. They lend an edgy, punk-ish vibe to any look. I like zippers on flirty or slouchy silhouettes the best; the juxtaposition of hard and soft is just sublime.

Here are some of my favorite zippered items.

The Savvy Stylist: Engagement Photos in the OC

Melissa writes:

I will be visiting California next week for the first time (I live in Florida) to attend a friend's wedding. While we are there, my fiance and I will be getting our engagement pictures taken. We're very excited, but a little nervous in front of the lens. I'd like to find the perfect outfit to wear that is breezy, fun, and comfortable for our shoot that also is flattering and stylish. We'll either be taking pictures in Laguna Beach, or at a pier on the water w/ a ferris wheel, cotton candy, and the whole 9 yards. What would you recommend? I love seeing what you come up with!

Sounds like so much fun, Melissa! Here's a look for only $93.65.

5 Under $50: Free People

I love the whimsical, offbeat fashions from Free People. Their pieces are sexy, bohemian and chic. Here are some of my favorite affordable items from this unique brand.
