I'm Dana, a thirty-something living in the Philadelphia area with my wonderful husband and my ridiculously adorable beagle. I live and breathe the web; my full-time gig is as a social media and SEO director, and I spend just as much time scouring the internet for fabulous celebs and the latest fashion on a budget.
I hope that this blog can be both a resource and a source of inspiration for regular people with regular bodies and regular budgets.

FAQ
How did you start blogging?
I'd always wanted to start a blog, but I didn't think I had anything interesting enough to say. I was a member of a (now-defunct) fashion community website, and I always enjoyed putting together celeb looks for less and finding fashionable deals. The other members of the forum praised my efforts and suggested that I start a blog. In March 2007, I started Fashion Under $100, and in July 2011, I rebranded into What the Frock?
Are you a full-time blogger?
Nopers. I am also a freelance social media consultant and copywriter. I basically spend all of my spare time working on the blog.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start their own fashion blog?
- Find a niche. Narrow down your content and figure out something to focus on.
- Write what you love. If you don't enjoy blogging, you'll never keep up with it and build an audience.
- Be consistent. Blog every day, or a set amount of times per week. Nobody will read a blog that is never updated. Treat blogging as a job, and set aside a certain amount of time per day or week to work on it.
- Have decent graphics. I stopped taking daily outfit pics because the photos looked like crap, but I have good graphic design skills, so I make sure that my outfit collages look as good a possible.
- Make friends. I hate the term "networking" but it's important if you want to build an audience. If there are other bloggers you enjoy or admire, reach out to them. Add them to your blog roll, ask them to guest post, or just Tweet at them to let them know how much you like their blog. And comment on other blogs but DO NOT spam the comments with your blog links. Most blogs allow you to hyperlink your name to your blog when you comment, so please don't write something like "Great outfit! Check out my contest at www.myblog.com!"
How do you create your collages and graphics?
When are you going to answer my reader request?
I have a ridiculous backlog of reader requests right now - almost 100 at last count! I try to prioritize them by date received and event date, but sometimes it's impossible to get to every one. I also get a lot of similar requests (you ladies attend a lot of weddings and fancy parties!) so if I don't get to your request, check out the Personal Shopper archives to see what I suggested for someone with a similar event.
Can you add me to your blogroll?
Email me your link and we'll see!
Do you accept guest posts?
I always line up guest posts when I'm going to be away, and I'm happy to accept them anytime from like-minded bloggers who want to offer a post. But, I never, ever accept unsolicited guest posts. That doesn't mean that I'm not willing to collaborate in other ways, though, so hit me up!
